The New York Giants have been dealt a significant blow to their offensive preparations for the upcoming season following confirmation that wide receiver Calvin Austin III will be sidelined for the remainder of the year. The 27-year-old sustained a torn ACL in his right knee during a training camp practice session on Tuesday.

The injury occurred during a one-on-one drill while Austin was running a route against cornerback Deonte Banks. The receiver collapsed to the ground and immediately clutched his knee, prompting an immediate response from the team's medical staff. The practice session was briefly halted as teammates gathered around the player before he was transported from the field by cart for further medical evaluation. Giants owner John Mara was also seen on the field offering support to the receiver before he departed.

Impact on the Giants offensive roster

Austin had joined the Giants this offseason on a one-year deal, arriving with expectations that he would occupy a key role as the team's primary slot receiver. His absence creates an immediate vacancy in the offensive rotation, with the team now looking toward alternative options to fill the void. During the remainder of Tuesday's practice, Braxton Berrios stepped into the slot receiver position with the first-team offense.

The development also brings increased attention to other members of the receiving corps, including veteran Odell Beckham Jr. and Darnell Mooney. Beckham, who has been working primarily with the second-team offense, delivered a productive performance on Tuesday, recording four catches in live drills, including two receptions from starting quarterback Jaxson Dart. Mooney also produced one of his most effective practice sessions of the summer on the same day.

Austin, who spent the first four years of his professional career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was coming off a season where he recorded 31 receptions for 372 yards and three touchdowns. The Giants will now be forced to adjust their offensive strategy as they navigate the remainder of their training camp schedule without his services.
