Earlier this summer, team owner Robert Kraft stated that the Patriots had extended an offer that would position Gonzalez as the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. When asked about the status of these discussions, Gonzalez maintained his preference for keeping negotiations private, noting that his team is clear on their objectives. The cornerback is currently represented by agent Reggie Johnson, who recently negotiated a significant four-year, $132 million extension for Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon.
Injury Concerns and Future Outlook
The contract saga coincides with a period of physical recovery for the former first-round pick. After being a full participant in training camp, Gonzalez suffered an injury on August 10 after landing hard in the end zone. The setback forced him to miss joint practices against the Indianapolis Colts and the Philadelphia Eagles. He returned to the practice field on August 24, though he declined to specify if his absence was strictly injury-related or influenced by the ongoing contract talks.
Drafted 17th overall in 2023, Gonzalez is eligible for an extension for the first time this offseason. While he skipped the majority of the team's voluntary offseason program, he expressed a desire to be rewarded as a Patriot during mandatory minicamp in June. Currently, he remains under contract for two additional seasons, with scheduled earnings of $2.259 million in 2026 and $18.11 million in 2027.
