Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud Targets Dual-Threat Evolution in 2026

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud has arrived at training camp with a noticeably leaner physique and a refined approach to his game, signaling a concerted effort to evolve into a more potent dual-threat option. The 2023 second overall pick, who has already established himself as a reliable passer, spent the offseason focusing on his conditioning by cutting sugar from his diet and increasing his muscle mass to enhance his overall speed and explosiveness.

The physical transformation has been evident during the early stages of camp, where Stroud has demonstrated an increased willingness to tuck the ball and challenge defenses with his legs. While the quarterback has recorded 609 rushing yards during his career, his teammates and coaches have noted a distinct improvement in his agility and ability to extend plays under pressure. Wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson remarked that Stroud is currently in the best physical shape he has seen since the quarterback joined the team.

Refining Mobility and Pocket Presence

Beyond the physical changes, Stroud’s development in the pocket has become a focal point for the Texans' coaching staff. Head coach DeMeco Ryans highlighted the quarterback's improved ability to navigate pressure while maintaining his focus downfield. According to Ryans, Stroud has shown greater composure when plays break down, consistently keeping two hands on the football and securing it while stepping up to make accurate throws.

This dual-threat capability is being viewed as a significant asset for the upcoming 2026 season, a year in which the organization holds high expectations. Quarterback coach Jerry Schuplinski described Stroud’s ability to blend pocket accuracy with the threat of a run as a coach's dream, though he emphasized the importance of the quarterback learning to protect himself when choosing to scramble. Stroud himself acknowledged that his primary goal in becoming stronger and leaner was to better absorb contact and remain durable throughout the season, a lesson learned after missing time due to a concussion in 2023.

A New Look and a Fresh Start

The offseason also brought a change in appearance for Stroud, who opted to cut his signature dreadlocks. The quarterback addressed the public speculation surrounding his decision, noting that he had considered the change for months and was simply looking for a fresh start. Despite the external narratives, Stroud remains focused on his preparation following a 2025 playoff run that ended in a divisional round loss to the New England Patriots.

General manager Nick Caserio has praised the quarterback's work ethic, calling this the best offseason Stroud has had since entering the league. As the Texans prepare for a season with Super Bowl aspirations, the team is banking on this improved version of their signal-caller to provide the versatility needed to navigate a challenging schedule. Defensive teammates, including cornerback Kamari Lassiter, have noted that Stroud’s athleticism has often been underestimated, and his current form is expected to challenge opposing defenses in new ways.
