Challenging Terrain and Intense Competition
Over the course of four days, the competitors faced 14 challenging stages, navigating through rugged terrain that included dense forests and uneven paths. Athul, a seasoned participant with a decade of experience and over 300 motorsport events under his belt, teamed up with Binil, who is primarily a motorbike racer. This event marked Binil's debut in car racing, where he served as co-driver, relying on his friend Athul's expertise. “I had no prior experience with four-wheelers, but I brought in my experience as a bike racer,” Binil explained.
The duo achieved an impressive score of 1,247 points out of a possible 1,400, showcasing their skill in one of the top ten toughest motor races globally. The Rainforest Challenge India, supported by the Goa State Government, pits drivers against extreme conditions, including relentless rain and treacherous terrain, making it a true test of endurance and skill.
Call for Sponsorship and Support
While celebrating their victory, Binil expressed a desire for increased sponsorship opportunities for participants in the sport. “Preparing for the race cost us close to ₹6 lakh. We had to use our savings to fund this endeavor. If we could secure sponsorships, it would significantly alleviate the financial burden,” he noted. He contrasted their experience with that of the winners in the 4X4 Extreme class from Arunachal Pradesh, who received a hero’s welcome.
Binil emphasized the need for local sponsorships to support aspiring motorsport enthusiasts in Kerala, where many talented drivers struggle to pursue their passion due to the high costs associated with the sport. “Motorsports provide a constructive outlet for young people who are passionate about speed, helping to foster a healthier attitude towards it,” he added, highlighting the potential benefits of the sport for the youth in the region.
