In Colombo, India faces another setback as Sai Sudharsan, their chosen No. 3 batter, is nearly confirmed to miss the upcoming match.

Shaik Rasheed and Sarfaraz Khan lead the race to take Sai Sudharsan's place in the Indian Test team.

In a significant setback for the Indian cricket team, Sai Sudharsan, who was expected to play a pivotal role as the No. 3 batter, is likely to miss the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, commencing on August 15 in Galle. The left-handed batsman is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Centre of Excellence due to a foot injury. Initially, there was hope that he would recover in time for the first Test, but recent assessments suggest that he may not receive the necessary medical clearance.

Potential Replacements Under Consideration

With Sudharsan's absence looming, the Indian team management is exploring options for his replacement. Shaik Rasheed and Sarfaraz Khan have emerged as the leading candidates to step in. Reports indicate that Sarfaraz has been at the Centre of Excellence for over a week, undergoing fitness evaluations, while Rasheed has been summoned to the Bengaluru facility for assessment this Sunday.

Rasheed recently showcased his talent during a tour with the India A team in Sri Lanka, where he scored 45, 63, and 20 in three innings. His performance has caught the attention of selectors, and he was slated to participate in a specialist batter camp at the CoE in the near future, alongside other promising players like R Smaran and Aman Mokhade.

Concerns Over Batting Depth

The Indian team management has expressed concerns regarding the depth of specialist batters available for the series. They have communicated this issue to the selectors, who were eager to test more batting options. However, the participation of Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, and Dhruv Jurel in the recent India A fixtures limited their ability to explore alternatives.

As for Sarfaraz, he has received advice from influential figures to consider batting higher in the order during domestic competitions, which could enhance his chances of selection. Known for his adeptness against spin and having gained valuable international experience, he is seen as a strong candidate to integrate into the team. Nevertheless, Rasheed's consistent progress and positive feedback from coaches at the CoE may give him the edge in the final decision. An official announcement from the BCCI regarding the replacement is anticipated soon.
