NEW DELHI: The future of Sarfaraz Khan in India's Test cricket framework is becoming increasingly ambiguous, yet the Mumbai batsman remains resolute in his determination to fight for his place. Recently, Sarfaraz took to Instagram to share a poignant message, accompanied by a still from the 2019 Telugu film "Jersey," stating, "I may not fit in, but I'll fight with everything I've got." This post resonated with cricket enthusiasts, especially as it surfaced just days before India embarks on a two-Test series against Sri Lanka.

Despite his impressive first-class statistics, Sarfaraz has once again been overlooked for selection. The 28-year-old has an outstanding average of 64.73 across 62 first-class matches, yet he has only donned the national jersey in six Test matches. His recent inclusion in the squad for the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy did not translate into playing time, as he remained on the sidelines throughout the series in Australia.

Sarfaraz's exclusion is particularly striking given his remarkable performance during the home series against New Zealand in 2024, where he scored a notable 150 runs in the first Test held in Bengaluru. This innings stood out as one of the few highlights in a series where India faced a historic 0-3 defeat on home soil. However, his subsequent performances fell short, with a highest score of just 11 in the following matches. Although he was included in the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he did not get the chance to play, and since then, opportunities to reclaim his spot have been limited.

Additionally, Sarfaraz was part of the India A team during the recent tour of England, but he found himself on the periphery, indicating that selectors may currently favor other players for Test positions.

Fitness has been a significant topic surrounding Sarfaraz, but he has made notable strides in this area, shedding excess weight and enhancing his overall conditioning. His return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2026 marked a comeback after going unsold in the previous two auctions. The Chennai Super Kings provided him with a platform, and he responded impressively, amassing 161 runs at a strike rate of 169.47, which included two half-centuries.
