In a commanding performance, Afghanistan secured a 92-run victory over Ireland in the second One Day International (ODI) at Bready Cricket Club on Friday, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The match followed the first ODI, which was abandoned due to rain without a ball being bowled. The second encounter faced similar weather challenges, resulting in a reduction to 47 overs per side.

Opting to bat first under overcast skies, Afghanistan faced early challenges against Ireland's new-ball attack. Mark Adair opened with a maiden over, while Jai Moondra struggled to contain Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who struck four boundaries in his first two overs. Gurbaz showcased his aggressive intent with a six and a four in Moondra's third over, but his innings ended prematurely when he attempted another big shot and was caught out.

Sediqullah Atal played a crucial role in maintaining the momentum, while captain Ibrahim Zadran adopted a more cautious approach initially. The duo formed a solid partnership, amassing 116 runs together, which propelled Afghanistan to 65 for 1. Ibrahim accelerated his scoring, reaching his half-century off 52 balls. Although Atal was dismissed in the 25th over, Ibrahim continued to anchor the innings, adding 43 runs with Rahmat Shah before both fell in quick succession. A further partnership of 43 runs between Azmatullah Omarzai and Darwish Rasooli kept Afghanistan on track, while Hashmatullah Shahidi's late blitz of 36 runs off just 21 balls helped the team finish with a formidable total of 299 for 8.

In response, Ireland began their chase confidently, reaching 65 for 1 despite the early loss of Paul Stirling. Andy Balbirnie looked in good form, and Cade Carmichael, playing only his fourth ODI, provided an aggressive counterattack, scoring 21 runs in a single over against Saleem Safi and reaching his maiden ODI fifty off 44 balls. However, the introduction of Afghanistan's spinners, particularly Rashid Khan, turned the tide of the match.

Rashid struck twice in quick succession, dismissing Balbirnie and Harry Tector, which left Ireland in a precarious position. Although Carmichael and Lorcan Tucker attempted to stabilize the innings with a 38-run partnership, Tucker's run-out during an LBW appeal marked the beginning of a dramatic collapse. Carmichael was dismissed shortly after for 62, leaving Ireland at 152 for 5. Despite a brief resurgence from Ben Calitz and Curtis Campher, who added 41 runs in three overs, Rashid's intervention ended their hopes. He claimed three of the last four wickets, finishing with remarkable figures of 6 for 34 as Ireland was bowled out for 207 in just 33.4 overs.
