In the first innings, Bangladesh managed to score 263 runs, but the CA XI responded strongly with 355 runs. However, the visitors' confidence quickly evaporated as they faced a dramatic collapse in their second innings, which lasted only 22 overs. Opener Tanzid Hasan was the only player to reach double figures, contributing 22 runs to the total.
Thompson's Bowling Masterclass
Bangladesh began their second innings already two wickets down and soon found themselves in dire straits as Thompson continued his onslaught from the previous evening. He took the first five wickets of the morning session, including that of Bangladesh's captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who was dismissed for a duck. Thompson concluded the innings by taking the last two wickets in consecutive deliveries, showcasing his exceptional talent despite having only one prior first-class appearance.
Reflecting on his performance, Thompson remarked, “Sometimes you get lucky. It fell my way today, which was nice. It's always a good experience and opportunity to come and play up against a Test side a few days out from a series.” He also noted the value of playing alongside seasoned Australian players, which he found to be an enriching experience.
Looking Ahead to the Test Series
Despite the heavy loss, Simmons urged his players to quickly shift their focus to the upcoming Test series against Australia, which begins on August 13. “Disappointing match, but we move on and we look forward to the Test match,” he stated, emphasizing the need for improvement in the coming days.
In a more positive development, left-arm spinner Taijul Islam, who sustained a finger injury while batting on the opening day, is reportedly recovering well. Bangladesh's team physio, Bayjedul Islam Khan, confirmed that both swelling and pain have decreased, and he is optimistic that Taijul will be fit for the first Test, which marks Bangladesh's first Test tour to Australia in 23 years.
