Stefanos Tsitsipas continued his steady ascent in the ATP rankings with a composed victory in the opening round of the Shanghai Masters on Thursday. The two-time major finalist navigated past qualifier Kimmer Coppejans with a 6-3, 7-5 win, marking a positive step forward after a challenging period on the tour.

The Greek star, who once reached a career-high ranking of world No. 3 in 2021, has been working to regain his form after slipping to No. 87 earlier this year. Having climbed back to No. 43, Tsitsipas will now look to maintain his momentum in the next round, where he is scheduled to face 18th-seeded Luciano Darderi.

In other action on the Shanghai courts, Hubert Hurkacz demonstrated his formidable serving prowess to progress to the next stage. The Polish player fired 19 aces during a 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory over James Duckworth. This win sets the stage for a marquee second-round encounter against Novak Djokovic, who arrives in Shanghai fresh off his 102nd career title victory at the China Open earlier this week.

Elsewhere in the draw, Bernard Tomic made a notable return to the ATP 1000 level, qualifying for a main draw for the first time in seven years. However, the former world No. 16 was unable to progress further, falling to Matteo Arnaldi in a 6-3, 6-1 defeat.

The tournament structure sees the top seeds, including Djokovic, US Open champion Alexander Zverev, and world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz, receive first-round byes, with their campaigns set to begin later in the week. Meanwhile, the field is missing world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who confirmed his withdrawal from the event earlier this week due to a right knee injury that will keep him sidelined for the remainder of 2026.
