As India prepares for the second T20I against West Indies in Ranchi, the BCCI has begun the search for a new selection committee member following the conclusion of Ajit Agarkar's three-year tenure.

Ajit Agarkar Steps Down as Chairman of BCCI Selection Committee

As the Indian cricket team prepares to face the West Indies in the second T20I at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi this Friday, a notable change has occurred within the national setup. Ajit Agarkar, who previously provided expert analysis on the very same pitch during India's 2023 T20I against New Zealand, will no longer be involved in the selection process for the squad.

Agarkar’s three-year term as the chairman of the BCCI men's selection committee officially concluded on October 4. The former fast bowler had previously informed the board of his decision not to seek an extension following the Annual General Meeting held on September 18. In the interim, Pragyan Ojha has stepped into the role of chairman, working alongside committee members Shiv Sundar Das, Ajay Ratra, and RP Singh.

Transition and Search for a Successor

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has officially initiated the recruitment process to fill the vacancy left by Agarkar. On Tuesday, the board invited applications for the position on the men's selection committee, setting a deadline of October 14 for interested candidates to submit their credentials.

Agarkar’s departure marks the end of a highly successful period for Indian cricket. During his tenure, the national team secured three major ICC trophies, including the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups and the 2025 Champions Trophy. His time in the role also saw the team claim two Asia Cup titles and consecutive gold medals at the Asian Games, alongside a runner-up finish in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Beyond the silverware, Agarkar’s period as chairman was defined by a significant transition phase for the Indian side, most notably overseeing the retirements of stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from the T20I and Test formats. In a public statement on social media, the BCCI expressed its gratitude for his service, acknowledging his commitment and the significant contributions made during his leadership of the selection panel. The board concluded its message by wishing the former pacer well in his future endeavors.
