In his communication to the board, de Silva expressed his belief that the time is right to transition the leadership to the next generation of players. Despite relinquishing the captaincy, he has confirmed that he will continue to make himself available for selection as a player, remaining a key part of the squad as he looks to extend his international career.
A tenure marked by tactical growth and key victories
During his 18-match tenure as captain between 2024 and 2026, de Silva oversaw a period of transition for the national side. His record as skipper concluded with seven victories, eight defeats, and three draws. Under his guidance, the team secured notable series wins, including triumphs over Afghanistan and New Zealand at home, as well as a successful series against Bangladesh both at home and away.
One of the defining moments of his leadership occurred early in his tenure during a Test in Sylhet. In only his second match as captain, de Silva delivered a standout performance by scoring centuries in both innings, which proved instrumental in securing a 328-run victory over Bangladesh. Throughout his time as captain, he maintained a batting average of 36.45 and contributed two additional centuries.
Looking ahead for Sri Lanka
The decision comes at a challenging juncture for the team, which currently sits seventh in the World Test Championship standings. Recent results have been difficult, including a series defeat in the West Indies and a home series loss to India. As a veteran of 69 Test matches, de Silva’s experience will remain a vital asset to the team as they prepare for future challenges.
Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva acknowledged the outgoing captain’s contributions, stating that the board thanks him for the leadership he provided and wishes him the best for the remainder of his playing career. The board has yet to name a successor to lead the Test side. The team’s next international assignment is a two-match Test series against Pakistan, which is scheduled to commence in Rawalpindi on November 9.
