Bhuvneshwar Kumar Earns India T20I Recall Following Stellar IPL Campaign

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has earned a recall to the Indian T20I squad for the upcoming five-match series against New Zealand, marking a significant return to the international stage four years after his last appearance. The 36-year-old fast bowler, who last represented India in November 2022 against the same opposition, was named in the 16-member squad by the BCCI earlier this week.

The selection follows a period of sustained excellence in domestic and franchise cricket. Most notably, Bhuvneshwar played a pivotal role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s second consecutive IPL title in 2026, finishing as the season's joint-highest wicket-taker with 28 scalps in 16 matches. He maintained an impressive average of 17.89 and an economy rate of 7.95 throughout the tournament. He further demonstrated his leadership and form by captaining the Lucknow Falcons to the UPT20 league final, claiming 14 wickets at an average of 16.57.

A Transformation Built on Discipline and Volume

Behind the veteran bowler's resurgence is a demanding physical regimen overseen by his personal strength and conditioning coach, Surya Pratap Yadav. To combat the natural challenges of aging, the pair focused heavily on body composition, successfully reducing Bhuvneshwar’s body fat from 19% to 14% while simultaneously increasing muscle mass. This shift has reportedly enhanced his force production and overall running speed.

According to Yadav, the workload required to maintain this level of fitness is substantial, with the bowler dedicating six to seven hours daily to a mix of gym sessions, rehabilitation, recovery, and skill-based practice. This routine includes a mandatory hour dedicated exclusively to injury prevention. Bhuvneshwar has integrated these habits into his daily life, treating them as a permanent commitment rather than a temporary measure to facilitate a national team comeback.

Context of the Return

Despite the excitement surrounding his return, the selection has sparked broader discussions regarding the role of age in professional cricket. Former players including Suresh Raina, Kris Srikkanth, and Mohammad Kaif have publicly supported the move, with Kaif highlighting the bowler's enduring ability to trouble batters with his trademark movement. Virender Sehwag also weighed in, questioning the relevance of age as a selection criterion when a player continues to deliver match-winning performances.

Bhuvneshwar’s inclusion provides India with a specialized swing option, particularly useful in New Zealand conditions where his ability to move the ball in the air remains a tactical asset. While his previous record in New Zealand has been modest—averaging 38.00 across 15 matches—the selectors have opted to prioritize his current form and fitness. Reflecting on his journey, Bhuvneshwar noted that he had moved away from setting long-term goals, choosing instead to focus on his performance in the powerplay and death overs, viewing this latest opportunity as a reward for his consistent work over the past four years.
