The Seattle Seahawks have opted not to sign veteran running back Joe Mixon after he failed to clear a physical. The team is now turning to other options to address their backfield depth.

Seahawks Pass on Joe Mixon Following Physical Examination

The Seattle Seahawks have decided against signing veteran running back Joe Mixon after the free agent underwent a physical examination with the team. The move, which was initially contingent on the results of that medical evaluation, brings an end to the club's brief pursuit of the 30-year-old veteran.

Mixon had participated in a workout for the Seahawks on Monday, with head coach Mike Macdonald confirming at the time that the player was going through the standard evaluation process. The decision not to proceed leaves the Seahawks looking elsewhere to bolster their running back room, which has been thinned by recent injuries.

Addressing Backfield Depth Amid Injury Concerns

The interest in Mixon stemmed from a series of setbacks in the Seattle backfield. Rookie Jadarian Price, the team's primary running back and a first-round selection, was placed on injured reserve this past Saturday due to a chest injury. While general manager John Schneider noted during a radio appearance on Seattle Sports 710-AM that the team does not view the injury as season-ending, Price is guaranteed to miss at least the next three games.

Further complicating matters, Jacardia Wright, the only running back previously on the practice squad, is currently managing a foot injury. In response to these personnel challenges, the Seahawks are reportedly moving to sign undrafted rookie Robert Henry Jr. from the Washington Commanders' practice squad. Macdonald acknowledged the urgency of the situation on Monday, stating, We are down runners and we need running backs.

Current Roster Status and Future Outlook

With the current rotation, Emanuel Wilson has stepped into the role of lead back. Wilson delivered a productive performance in Sunday's 30-23 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, recording 81 rushing yards on 21 carries and adding a touchdown on the ground, along with three receptions for 39 yards and another score. George Holani continues to serve as the second option, particularly on third-down situations, while Velus Jones Jr. has been elevated to the third spot.

The team is also monitoring the progress of Zach Charbonnet, who is working his way back from an ACL tear sustained during the previous season's playoffs. Although Charbonnet returned to practice last Thursday and is now eligible to play after missing the mandatory four-game window, Macdonald confirmed that he will not make his season debut in the upcoming matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. Mixon, who was released by the Houston Texans in March, previously earned Pro Bowl honors in 2024 after rushing for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns.
