A New Leadership Structure
Mandhana, 30, steps into the full-time captaincy role with significant experience, having previously led India in 18 T20Is and four ODIs. Her leadership credentials have been further bolstered by her success in the Women’s Premier League, where she guided Royal Challengers Bengaluru to titles in both 2024 and 2026. Reflecting on her appointment, Mandhana expressed that leading the national side is a profound honour she deeply values.
The new captain also paid tribute to her predecessor, acknowledging the commitment and contributions Kaur made during her tenure. As the team moves forward, the inclusion of Verma as T20I vice-captain and Sharma as the ODI deputy provides a blend of youthful energy and seasoned expertise to assist Mandhana in her new responsibilities.
Preparation for the Zimbabwe Series
The leadership group will face its first test in the upcoming home series against Zimbabwe. The tour is scheduled to commence with three T20Is in Raipur on October 16, 18, and 20, followed by a three-match ODI series in Vadodara on October 23, 25, and 28.
The squad selections for the series reflect a mix of continuity and fresh faces. For the T20I format, Niki Prasad, Minnu Mani, Anushka Sharma, and Jintimani Kalita have been brought into the side, while Pratika Rawal has been omitted. The ODI squad sees the inclusion of Rawal and Harleen Deol, alongside Vaishnavi Sharma, who earned a call-up following a notable six-wicket performance against Australia Women’s A. Jemimah Rodrigues remains sidelined for the ODI series due to a hamstring injury.
