Rio Ferdinand Criticises Jorge Jesus Over Cristiano Ronaldo Treatment

Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand has launched a sharp critique of Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus, accusing him of mistreating Cristiano Ronaldo. The comments follow a period of tension within the national team camp, which saw the veteran striker depart early following a breakdown in communication during the UEFA Nations League.

The friction between the pair became public during Portugal's match against Norway. Despite being instructed to warm up with the clear expectation of entering the game, Ronaldo remained on the bench for the duration of the fixture. While Jorge Jesus later cited tactical reasons for the decision, the incident has highlighted a growing rift between the coach and his star player.

Ferdinand Demands Accountability

Speaking on his 'Rio Presents' podcast, Ferdinand expressed his frustration with the situation, suggesting that the manager’s handling of the legendary forward was entirely inappropriate. Having played alongside Ronaldo at Manchester United between 2003 and 2009, Ferdinand argued that the striker’s extensive history in the sport warrants a higher level of professional respect than he has received under the current regime.

Ferdinand went as far as to suggest that the manager should issue a formal apology for his conduct. He remarked that if the coach does not acknowledge that he misjudged the situation, he risks losing his position. According to the former defender, the core issue lies in poor management and a failure to establish a clear, respectful role for one of football's most decorated players.

Managing Personalities and Team Needs

The debate surrounding Ronaldo’s role in the modern game remains a point of contention. Ferdinand acknowledged that while there are legitimate questions regarding how to integrate the veteran into the current squad, the responsibility ultimately rests with the coaching staff to manage both the team’s tactical requirements and the individual needs of the players.

Ferdinand maintained that Ronaldo still possesses the ability to contribute to the national side, whether as a starter or an impact substitute. He emphasised that the current impasse is a failure of leadership, noting that managers are tasked not only with tactical organisation but also with the human element of team management. For Ferdinand, the path forward requires a transparent dialogue and a commitment to respecting the agreements made between the coaching staff and the players.
