McVay addressed the media on Saturday, noting that while the medical procedure was successful, the team does not anticipate opening Garrett’s 21-day practice window in the coming week. The Rams are prioritizing a full return to peak performance rather than rushing the pass rusher back into active duty.
Managing the recovery process
Garrett was placed on injured reserve in mid-September after playing in the Rams' season opener. Following that initial game, the defensive standout admitted he was not operating at full health. His current recovery follows a period during training camp where he was sidelined by persistent knee irritation, an issue the team hopes has been fully resolved by the surgery.
McVay emphasized that the focus remains on how Garrett feels on a week-to-week basis. The coaching staff is keen to see the defensive star complete football-related drills and activities before he is cleared to rejoin the main group. McVay expressed optimism that once Garrett begins these specific movements, the process of returning to his usual form could be accelerated.
High expectations for the star acquisition
The Rams acquired Garrett during the offseason in a significant trade with the Cleveland Browns, sending away two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Jared Verse along with three draft picks, including a 2027 first-round selection. The move was made with the expectation that Garrett would anchor the defense, building on his record-setting 23-sack campaign from the previous season.
As the team navigates the middle portion of the season, McVay remains focused on ensuring that when Garrett does return, he is capable of performing at the elite level the team expects. For now, the defensive end will continue his rehabilitation program away from full team practices.
