Steelers Place Wide Receiver Michael Pittman Jr. on Injured Reserve

The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially placed wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. on injured reserve, a move confirmed by the organization on Saturday. The decision follows an aggravation of a lingering foot injury that occurred during the team's practice session this past Wednesday.

Head coach Mike McCarthy indicated on Thursday that the receiver is now expected to be sidelined for several weeks. The injury, identified as plantar fasciitis in his left foot, has been a recurring issue for the 29-year-old, having previously forced him to sit out the Week 2 matchup against the New England Patriots. Following Wednesday's practice, the veteran was observed using a scooter in the locker room to avoid putting weight on his injured foot.

Impact of the roster move and background

This development marks a difficult start to Pittman's tenure in Pittsburgh. The team acquired the wideout from the Indianapolis Colts in a March trade involving a late-round pick swap, subsequently signing him to a three-year, $59 million contract extension. Despite his track record, which includes two 1,000-yard seasons during his six-year stint with the Colts, his production in a Steelers uniform has been limited. Through the early stages of the season, he has recorded seven receptions on 12 targets for 89 yards.

The receiver's availability has been a concern since his arrival, as he also missed a significant portion of training camp due to an undisclosed injury. The timing of this stint on injured reserve is particularly notable as the Steelers prepare for their upcoming game against the Colts this Sunday. As a second-round selection in the 2020 NFL Draft, Pittman remains a key part of the team's long-term offensive plans, though his immediate focus will now shift to recovery and rehabilitation.
