Teenage talent Anushka Yadav set a new meet record of 66.53m in the hammer throw at the 65th National Open Athletics Championships, while Baranica Elangovan secured gold in the pole vault.

Anushka Yadav delivered a standout performance on the penultimate day of the 65th National Open Athletics Championships at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. The 18-year-old hammer thrower dominated the field, setting a new meet record with a throw of 66.53m to eclipse the previous mark of 64.42m, which had stood for five years in the name of Manju Bala.

Yadav, who finished fourth at the 2026 Asian Games, demonstrated remarkable consistency throughout the competition. After establishing her lead early, she produced a series of throws measuring 62.21m, 65.75m, 66.47m, a foul, 66.53m, and 65.25m. Her winning effort sits just shy of her personal best of 67.02m, underscoring her status as one of the country's most promising young athletes.

Baranica Elangovan and Other Notable Performances

In the women's pole vault, Asian Games 2026 bronze medallist Baranica Elangovan reaffirmed her class by securing a comfortable victory. Representing the Railways, Elangovan cleared a height of 4.10m to take the gold medal. The podium was rounded out by Mariya Jaison, also of the Railways, who cleared 3.90m, and Karnataka's Sindhushree G, who recorded 3.80m.

The third day of the championships saw several other competitive finals across various disciplines. In the men's 5,000m, Sunil Dawar of Madhya Pradesh claimed top honours with a time of 14:01.64, narrowly edging out Railway duo Shivaji M and Ajay Bind. Meanwhile, the men's high jump saw Rohit secure gold with a leap of 2.19m, while Karanveer Singh of Punjab dominated the shot put with a distance of 19.63m.

The women's long jump proved to be a tightly contested affair, with Mubassina Mohammed of ONGC clinching victory with a jump of 6.38m, just ahead of Uttar Pradesh's Shaili Singh, who managed 6.37m. In the javelin throw, Ramyashree Jain of the Railways secured the gold with a throw of 56.63m. The relay events also provided high-intensity action, with the SSCB team winning the men's 4x100m in 39.76 seconds, while the Railway squad claimed the women's 4x100m title in 45.56 seconds and the mixed 4x400m relay in 3:21.60.
