Anushka Yadav Smashes Meet Record at National Open Athletics Championships

National record-holder Anushka Yadav capped off a productive year by claiming the hammer throw gold medal on the third day of the National Open Athletics Championships. The 18-year-old athlete, who recently competed at the Asian Games, produced a standout performance with a throw of 66.53m, comfortably eclipsing the previous meet record held by Manju Rani by more than two metres.

The victory marks a significant improvement for Yadav, who finished fifth at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. Her latest mark surpassed her performance in that continental event; had she replicated this distance in Aichi-Nagoya, she would have secured a higher finish, placing her ahead of teammate and former national record holder Tanya Chaudhary.

Karanveer Singh and Relay Teams Shine

Shot-putter Karanveer Singh also delivered a notable turnaround at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. After a disappointing 10th-place finish at the Asian Games where he managed 18.40m, Singh dominated the field with a best throw of 19.63m. His performance on Saturday would have been sufficient to place him in the top four at the Asiad. The silver medal went to Railways' Sanyam, who edged out teammate Anurag Kaler on a tie-breaker, as both athletes recorded a best distance of 18.32m.

In the track events, the Railways quartet secured a gold medal in the 4x400m mixed relay with a time of 3:21.60. The team was anchored by Kiran Pahal, who had previously been part of the Indian squad that claimed gold at the Asian Games. Pahal, who withdrew from the individual 400m semifinals after setting the fastest time in the heats, ensured victory after teammate Vikrant Panchal moved the team from third to first place during the third lap.

Distance and Field Event Results

Bengal’s Shampa Gain achieved a notable double by adding the 10,000m title to her 5,000m gold from the opening day, clocking 35:33.90 in the longer event. Meanwhile, Shivaji Madappa, who won the 10,000m on Thursday, was unable to complete a similar double, finishing with a silver medal in the 5,000m behind winner Sunil Dawar of Madhya Pradesh.

In the high jump, Rohit capitalized on the absence of top competitors Sarvesh Kushare and Aadarsh Ram to secure the top spot with a clearance of 2.19m. Other notable results included Mubassina Mohd. winning the long jump with a 6.38m leap and Baranica Elangovan taking the pole vault title with a height of 4.10m. Ramyashree Jain rounded out the field event winners by claiming the javelin throw gold with a distance of 56.63m.
