Mumbai off-spinning all-rounder
Kotian, who has been on the fringes of national selection, views the upcoming domestic campaign as a vital platform to showcase his growth. Having spent time in the India Test squad during the 2024-25 tour of Australia, the Vikhroli-born cricketer is focused on maintaining his form rather than dwelling on past selection snubs. He remains committed to contributing with both bat and ball, aiming to provide match-winning efforts for his state side.
Refining the craft with new variations
A key focus for Kotian has been expanding his tactical repertoire. During the Duleep Trophy in August, he demonstrated his ability to operate with the new ball, claiming eight wickets for 118 runs across two innings against North Zone. He noted that he has been working on utilizing the crease more effectively, varying his pace, and perfecting his arm ball and straighter deliveries to become a more versatile threat on different surfaces.
Addressing external criticism regarding his ability to dismiss top-order batters, Kotian remained confident in his record. He pointed to his history of five-wicket hauls as evidence of his capability. Reflecting on his injury-plagued previous season, where an elbow issue limited him to three matches and nine wickets at an average of 32.77, he defended his performance in the quarterfinal against Karnataka. Despite the lack of wickets in that game, he maintained that his bowling was of a high standard and was hampered only by dropped catches.
Building on a proven track record
Kotian’s rise to prominence was cemented during the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy season, where he was named player of the tournament for his pivotal role in Mumbai’s title-winning campaign. He amassed 502 runs at an average of 41.83 and claimed 29 wickets at 16.96. While he has since performed for India A against Australia A, he continues to prioritize his immediate responsibilities with Mumbai.
When asked about being overlooked for the India Test tour of Sri Lanka in August, Kotian maintained a professional outlook. He emphasized that his focus remains on performing in every match he plays, whether for his state or in representative fixtures. By staying committed to his preparation and giving his best in every aspect of the game, including fielding, he hopes to be ready whenever the next opportunity to represent the national team arises.
