Kawhi Leonard Commits to Toronto Raptors with Two-Year Extension

Toronto Raptors star Kawhi Leonard has secured his long-term future with the franchise, agreeing to a two-year, $115 million contract extension. The deal, which includes a player option for the 2028-29 season, was confirmed on Tuesday by his agent, Harrison Gaines of SLASH Sports. This agreement brings the total value of Leonard’s current contract to $165 million over three years.

The extension follows months of consistent dialogue between Leonard and the Raptors organization, which began shortly after his return to the team in June. Leonard, who turned 35 in June, reportedly opted to take $11 million less than his maximum possible extension. Additionally, he waived a $7.45 million trade kicker to provide the Raptors with greater flexibility regarding their salary cap management.

The league’s investigation concluded earlier this month, resulting in significant sanctions against the Clippers, including a $30 million fine, the loss of five future first-round picks, and a one-year suspension for owner Steve Ballmer. As part of the findings, Leonard was required to pay $700,000 in restitution regarding improper benefits previously provided to his former business representative, Dennis Robertson. Following these events, Leonard parted ways with Robertson and his former agent, Mitch Frankel, appointing Gaines to represent him in June.

With this extension in place, Leonard has expressed an intention to conclude his professional career in Toronto. The agreement marks a significant milestone for the Raptors as they look to integrate the veteran star back into their core roster for the coming seasons.
