Chicago Bears Quarterback Crisis: Tyson Bagent Enters Concussion Protocol

The Chicago Bears are navigating a significant personnel crisis at the quarterback position following news that backup Tyson Bagent has entered the NFL's concussion protocol. This development further complicates the team's offensive outlook as they prepare for their upcoming Monday night matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Bagent’s status became a concern following the team's 9-3 defeat to the Minnesota Vikings this past Sunday. During the final play of that contest, Bagent was sacked after Vikings linebacker Dallas Turner bypassed tight end Colston Loveland. Bagent, who joined the Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2023, had entered the game in relief of starter Caleb Williams, completing 5 of 9 passes for 54 yards.

Uncertainty Surrounding Caleb Williams and Potential Keenum Start

The availability of Caleb Williams remains the primary question for the Bears' coaching staff. Williams is currently managing a right hamstring injury, which has left his status for the game against Philadelphia in doubt. Head coach Ben Johnson confirmed on Monday that Williams is considered week-to-week, noting that while the quarterback is unlikely to participate in practice this week, he has not been officially ruled out of the upcoming game.

Following an MRI on Monday morning, Coach Johnson described the initial medical feedback as somewhat encouraging. Despite the optimism regarding the recovery process, the team must prepare for contingencies. If neither Williams nor Bagent is cleared to play, veteran Case Keenum is the next option on the depth chart. Keenum, who has not seen regular-season action since 2023, would be tasked with leading the offense if the current injuries persist.

Addressing the recovery timeline for his starting quarterback, Johnson emphasized Williams' unique approach to rehabilitation. While declining to provide a specific return date, the coach noted that Williams has historically recovered faster than anticipated. For now, the organization remains in a holding pattern as they monitor the health of their top two signal-callers ahead of their prime-time appearance.
