Jacks leads England to comfortable victory
England secured a dominant 89-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the 2026 series at the Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, England posted a competitive total of 265 all out in 48.1 overs. Harry Brook anchored the innings with a composed 67 off 69 balls, while Jacks provided vital support with a brisk 46 off 47 deliveries. Sri Lanka’s bowling attack remained disciplined throughout the first innings, with Sachindu Colombage leading the charge by claiming 3/44 from his 10 overs to keep the hosts in check.
Jacks dismantles Sri Lankan chase
Facing a target of 266, Sri Lanka’s pursuit never gained the necessary momentum. Despite an early breakthrough by the English bowlers, the visitors struggled to build meaningful partnerships against a persistent attack. The turning point of the match arrived when Will Jacks trapped Kusal Mendis lbw, removing a key figure in the Sri Lankan middle order and effectively breaking the back of the chase.
Jacks continued to wreak havoc, finishing with remarkable figures of 5/22 from his seven overs. While Dunith Wellalage offered some resistance with a defiant 45 off 36 balls, the required rate proved too steep as the visitors were eventually bowled out for 176. Alongside Jacks’ heroics, the efforts of Sachindu Colombage and Asitha Fernando were notable for Sri Lanka, but they could not prevent England from sealing a comprehensive win.
