Nicolas Batum Retires From Professional Basketball After 18 NBA Seasons

Longtime NBA forward and French basketball icon Nicolas Batum has officially announced his retirement from professional basketball. The 37-year-old confirmed the decision in a heartfelt social media video featuring his son, Ayden, marking the end of a career that spanned two decades as a professional athlete.

Batum, who spent 18 seasons in the NBA, reflected on his journey while speaking to his son, noting that the time had come to step away from the game. Having played two seasons in the French league before transitioning to the NBA in 2008, Batum expressed satisfaction with his professional accomplishments, stating that he had done everything he set out to achieve.

Following his tenure in Portland, Batum enjoyed a lengthy stint with the Charlotte Hornets before joining the LA Clippers, where he spent the majority of his final six seasons. He also had a brief stop with the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2023-24 campaign. In his final season, Batum appeared in 74 games, averaging 4.0 points and 2.5 rebounds. Throughout his NBA career, he played in 76 playoff games and reached the Western Conference finals with the Clippers in 2021. Earlier this summer, the Clippers declined their option on his $5.9 million contract for the 2026-27 season, making him an unrestricted free agent prior to his retirement announcement.

Batum highlighted the semifinal victory over Germany at the 2024 Paris Olympics as the pinnacle of his basketball experience. Having concluded his international duties two years prior to his final retirement, the Lisieux native leaves behind a legacy as one of France's most committed and decorated players, having shared the court with key teammates such as Rudy Gobert and Evan Fournier throughout his tenure.
