Real Madrid and La Liga Issue Apologies Following Kylian Mbappe’s Controversial Remarks

Real Madrid and La Liga have issued formal apologies following a significant backlash in China sparked by comments made by Kylian Mbappe regarding former Chinese leader Mao Zedong. The controversy, which originated from an interview clip on the French show The Bridge, has led to immediate commercial and broadcast consequences for the Spanish football giants.

In the now-removed video, Mbappe discussed an internet meme that featured his likeness photoshopped onto Mao, referring to the historical figure as a Chinese dictator. The remarks drew intense criticism on Chinese social media, as Mao remains a highly sensitive figure in the country. Following the outcry, Mbappe issued an apology on Tuesday, which included a version written in Hanzi, acknowledging that his words were ill-judged and expressing regret for the offence caused to Chinese communities globally.

Commercial and Broadcast Fallout

The situation escalated rapidly beyond social media, impacting the financial interests of both the player and the league. China Media Group, which operates the state broadcaster CCTV, suspended the airing of La Liga matches. Furthermore, several Chinese companies, including beverage firm Dongpeng and dairy brands Mengniu and Milkground, have terminated their partnerships with the French forward. Additionally, Mbappe’s accounts on platforms such as Weibo and Xiaohongshu have faced restrictions.

Real Madrid released an official statement confirming their support for the player’s apology, noting that the club reiterates its respect for the Chinese people. La Liga also expressed deep regret regarding the offence caused to Chinese fans. Despite these efforts, the situation remains tense, with some Chinese state media outlets criticising the club’s perceived tolerance of such remarks.

Economic Stakes for Spanish Football

The urgency behind the apologies reflects the significant commercial reliance La Liga and Real Madrid have on the Chinese market. Alongside the United States, China represents a primary source of international broadcasting revenue for the league, with rights for the 2024-25 season valued at 748 million euros. La Liga has actively courted this audience by adjusting match schedules and securing a long-term broadcasting agreement with the digital platform Migu that extends until 2030.

For Real Madrid, the stakes are equally high, as the club reportedly derives between 10 and 15 per cent of its total merchandise sales from China. With various Chinese companies serving as club sponsors, the rapid move to distance the institution from the controversy highlights the critical importance of maintaining a positive standing within the region.
