Dallas Mavericks CEO Rick Welts Announces Second Retirement

Dallas Mavericks CEO Rick Welts has announced his retirement for the second time, marking the end of a distinguished career that has spanned nearly five decades within the NBA. The 73-year-old Hall of Famer, who joined the Mavericks in 2024 to assist with the franchise's long-term infrastructure goals, will remain in his current position until December 31.

The leadership transition will see team president Ethan Casson step into the role of CEO and alternate governor. Casson, who joined the Mavericks organization last year, brings significant executive experience to the position, having previously served as the CEO of the Minnesota Timberwolves for nine years and as the chief operating officer for the San Francisco 49ers.

A Legacy of Arena Development and Leadership

Welts arrived in Dallas following a successful tenure with the Golden State Warriors, where he played a pivotal role in the development of the Chase Center, facilitating the team’s move from Oakland to San Francisco in 2019. His expertise in arena projects was a primary factor in his recruitment by Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont, who sought his guidance to navigate the complexities of the franchise's future stadium plans.

The organization recently unveiled ambitious plans to construct a new arena in north Dallas, with a target opening date set for the 2031-32 season. This move would represent a significant shift for the franchise, which has played its home games in downtown Dallas since its inaugural 1980-81 season. Reflecting on his time with the team, Welts expressed pride in the progress made during his tenure and voiced his full confidence in his successor.

Dumont praised the outgoing CEO for his contributions, noting that Welts provided essential leadership and judgment during a critical period for the Mavericks. Before his time in Dallas and his decade-long stint with the Warriors, Welts held various roles within the Phoenix Suns organization and the NBA league offices. His departure concludes a career that has left a lasting impact on the business operations of multiple professional basketball franchises.
