WPL 2027 Auction: Five Notable Stars Who Failed to Attract Bids

The Women's Premier League (WPL) 2027 mini-auction held in Kochi concluded with a series of surprising omissions, as several established international stars and familiar domestic faces failed to secure a contract. With limited roster spots available across the five competing franchises, teams were forced to be highly selective, focusing their remaining budgets on specific tactical needs rather than general experience.

The intense competition for limited slots meant that even players with proven track records found themselves without a home for the upcoming season. The auction dynamics highlighted the evolving priorities of the franchises as they look to balance their squads for the next campaign.

High-Profile Names Left Without Contracts

Among the most prominent players to go unsold was Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu. Despite entering the auction with a base price of Rs 30 lakh, the experienced all-rounder did not receive a bid. Athapaththu, who previously represented the UP Warriorz during the 2024 season—where she contributed 28 runs and four wickets across four appearances—has now faced consecutive setbacks after also missing out on a contract during the 2026 mega-auction.

England batter Sophia Dunkley also saw her name pass without a buyer. Listed at a base price of Rs 50 lakh, the aggressive top-order specialist was one of the higher-priced players in the pool. Her exclusion underscores the fierce nature of the market for overseas slots, where franchises are often looking for very specific roles to fill their starting XIs.

Domestic Talents Face Setbacks

The domestic contingent also saw significant names left on the sidelines. Saika Ishaque, whose breakout performance during the Mumbai Indians' 2023 title-winning campaign saw her claim 15 wickets and earn a call-up to the national side, went unsold at her base price of Rs 30 lakh. Her absence from the upcoming season is a notable development given her previous impact on the league.

The auction also proved difficult for members of India’s recent international squads. Uma Chetry, a member of the 2025 Women’s World Cup-winning team, failed to attract a bid. Although the 24-year-old wicketkeeper-batter offers technical skills behind the stumps, she remains without a franchise contract. Similarly, Bengal pacer Titas Sadhu, who gained recognition as part of India's 2023 ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup-winning side, was unable to find a buyer despite her reputation for generating movement with the ball.
