Real Madrid Issues Apology to China Following Kylian Mbappe’s Controversial Remarks

Real Madrid has officially apologised to the Chinese public following controversial remarks made by star striker Kylian Mbappe regarding former Chinese leader Mao Zedong. The incident, which originated from a now-removed video interview with the French show The Bridge, involved the 27-year-old footballer joking about an internet meme that superimposed his face onto an image of the late leader.

The fallout from the comments has been swift and significant. In a statement released on Wednesday, the 15-time European champions expressed regret for any offence caused, confirming that the club supports the personal apology issued by the player. Mbappe had previously shared a statement in French, Chinese, and English, acknowledging that his words were ill-judged and expressing his respect for the Chinese people and communities globally.

Commercial and Broadcast Consequences

The backlash has extended beyond public criticism, impacting both the player’s commercial interests and the broadcast of Spanish football in the region. China’s state broadcaster, CMG, which oversees CCTV, confirmed the suspension of La Liga broadcasts in response to the controversy. Furthermore, several major Chinese brands, including beverage company Dongpeng and dairy firms Mengniu and Milkground, have terminated their partnerships with the striker.

Digital platforms have also taken action against the player. Mbappe’s accounts on Weibo and Xiaohongshu have been frozen or banned for violating community conventions. Reports indicate that global brands such as Dior and Hublot have removed content featuring the footballer from their Chinese social media channels. In Beijing, physical retail presence has also been affected, with Adidas flagship stores in the Sanlitun district reportedly removing shirts bearing the player's name from their inventory.

Diplomatic and Media Response

The Chinese government has acknowledged the apologies, with foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stating that authorities are taking the player's regret seriously. However, the incident has drawn sharp criticism from state media, with the Global Times suggesting that the club's perceived tolerance for such behaviour contributed to the situation. The People's Daily emphasised that respecting the history and national sentiments of other nations remains a fundamental principle for international interaction.

This development mirrors previous tensions between international sports entities and China, most notably the 2019 incident involving the NBA, which resulted in a year-long suspension of games on state television. As the situation continues to unfold, the focus remains on the broader implications for the player’s standing in the Chinese market and the future of La Liga broadcasts in the country.
