Meghalaya Government Approves Land for NorthEast United FC Football Academy

The Meghalaya state government has taken a significant step toward professionalising its football development pipeline by approving a 45-year lease for a new football academy. The Cabinet has allocated 19.99 acres of land in Mawkhanu, New Shillong, to Indian Super League side NorthEast United FC to facilitate the construction of a high-performance training facility.

This strategic move is designed to bridge the gap between the state's existing grassroots initiatives and the requirements for elite-level competition. By partnering with a professional club, the government aims to provide a pathway for young players to hone their skills and eventually compete on the international stage, moving beyond the foundational training currently offered across the state.

Infrastructure Investment and Strategic Relocation

The project is expected to bring a substantial financial injection into the region, with NorthEast United FC proposing an investment between Rs 40 crore and Rs 50 crore. The planned infrastructure includes three dedicated football grounds, comprehensive accommodation facilities, and additional support structures. Furthermore, the agreement revives long-standing discussions regarding the potential relocation of the club’s entire management operations from Guwahati to Shillong.

Cabinet Minister and government spokesperson Wailadmiki Shylla highlighted that while the state has successfully established nearly 125 grassroots football centres, the missing link has been the availability of professional-grade academies. The government has previously provided financial backing to local entities, including Rs 3 crore to Shillong Lajong and Rs 30 lakh to Mawlai Sports Club, but officials believe the new academy will serve as a vital next step for player progression.

Future Sporting Prospects for Shillong

The establishment of the academy is expected to complement ongoing state-led infrastructure projects, such as the football stadium currently under construction. Minister Shylla noted that the presence of a top-tier academy could eventually facilitate the hosting of Indian Super League and Durand Cup matches within Shillong, further integrating the city into the national football landscape.

Addressing concerns regarding the impact on local football, the government clarified that this partnership does not preclude support for other organisations. Officials emphasised that the door remains open for local clubs to submit proposals for government assistance, ensuring that the development of the sport remains inclusive while simultaneously fostering high-level professional training environments.
