In an interview with The Athletic, Akram shared his personal distress regarding the situation, framing his comments as those of a concerned friend rather than a political observer. He stressed that the focus should be on safeguarding the health of the 1992 World Cup-winning captain, irrespective of his status as a convicted individual or his current jail term. Akram expressed skepticism regarding the information provided by the government concerning Imran's condition, admitting that he finds it difficult to discern the truth amidst the conflicting reports.
The legendary pacer also highlighted a perceived disparity between international advocacy and the domestic response within Pakistan. While movements in England and other parts of the world have sought to improve conditions for the former Prime Minister, Akram expressed uncertainty about whether sufficient efforts are being made locally to ensure his wellbeing.
Growing international and domestic support
Akram’s comments align with a broader wave of concern from the global cricketing community. Recently, 22 former international captains signed an open letter addressed to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, requesting humane treatment and adequate medical care for Imran. Notable figures, including West Indies icon Brian Lara and Australian captain Pat Cummins, have publicly supported these calls, with Lara describing the former all-rounder as a legend who deserves basic humanity.
Within Pakistan, several former players have also voiced their anxieties. Javed Miandad, Moin Khan, and Ramiz Raja have all spoken out regarding the situation, with Miandad making an emotional appeal for the resolution of differences between the government and the former captain. These concerns were further amplified following an interview with Imran’s sons, Sulaiman and Kasim, who shared their fears regarding their father's safety. Although a court has recently ordered that Imran be granted access to his personal physician and sister, as well as admission to a specific hospital, the uncertainty surrounding his health remains a significant point of discussion.
