Gavit’s ambition comes on the heels of a successful campaign in Glasgow, where his record-breaking run highlighted his status as a premier sprinter. Speaking at a felicitation ceremony in New Delhi, where SBI Life Insurance honoured the para-athletics team for their seven-medal haul at the Commonwealth Games, Gavit expressed his determination to improve upon his previous achievements.
Building on Past Success and Future Ambitions
The sprinter, who famously secured India's 100th medal at the 2023 Asian Para Games by winning gold in the men's 400m T47 event, is looking to elevate his performance further. While he focused exclusively on the 100m sprint in Glasgow, his training regimen has now shifted to accommodate the demands of both distances. Gavit noted that his coach is currently overseeing his preparation for the dual-event challenge, with the ultimate goal of hoisting the Indian flag high on the podium.
Drawing inspiration from legendary sprinter Usain Bolt, Gavit continues to study the Jamaican icon’s technique. While he admits that the 400m event requires a significant mental approach, he maintains a strong affinity for the intensity of the 100m sprint. Reflecting on his journey, Gavit expressed gratitude for the recognition received from SBI Life Insurance, which celebrated the achievements of the para-athletes alongside the Paralympic Committee of India.
Support for Para-Athletes and Team Outlook
The felicitation event also featured Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath, who claimed silver in the men's 100m in Glasgow with a time of 10.83 seconds. For Basil, the upcoming Asian Games represent a significant milestone as his first appearance at the event. He expressed optimism regarding his preparations and his desire to improve his personal timings while competing in Japan.
The ceremony, attended by SBI Life Insurance MD and CEO Amit Jhingran and Paralympic Committee of India president Devendra Jhajharia, served to acknowledge the broader success of the Indian contingent, which returned from Glasgow with three gold, two silver, and two bronze medals. Other athletes honoured at the event included Sharmila Dhankar, Soman Rana, Shubham Juyal, Shilpa Shyla, and Jhandu Kumar. As the athletes look ahead, the focus remains on maintaining their momentum and securing further international success for India.
