Avinash Sable eyes strong comeback at Indian Athletics Series Final

Indian steeplechase specialist Avinash Sable is set to make his long-awaited return to competitive action at the Indian Athletics Series Final in New Delhi this Thursday. The event serves as a critical tune-up for the athlete as he prepares to defend his title at the upcoming Asian Games later this month.

Sable’s return follows a challenging 14-month hiatus necessitated by a serious knee injury sustained during the Monaco Diamond League last year. The steeplechaser, who had entered that event in peak condition after securing gold at the Asian Championships, suffered a fall at the water jump that resulted in ACL and meniscus damage, ultimately requiring surgery.

A difficult road to recovery

Reflecting on the ordeal during a media interaction facilitated by the Sports Authority of India, the 31-year-old admitted that the recovery process was defined by significant emotional turmoil and moments of self-doubt. He noted that the severity of the injury only became fully apparent upon his return to India, leading to his unfortunate absence from the World Championships.

The path back to fitness was far from linear. Although Sable began light jogging months after his procedure, he faced further setbacks when shin pain forced his withdrawal from the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in April. Despite these hurdles, he has completed extensive rehabilitation and is now confident in his physical condition.

Focusing on the Asian Games

Sable expressed relief at his return to the track, acknowledging that there were moments during his recovery when he questioned whether he would be able to continue his athletic career. Having overcome those doubts, he is now fully focused on his performance in New Delhi and the subsequent challenge of the Asian Games.

With his rehabilitation behind him, the athlete is determined to deliver his best for his country and supporters. His participation in the Indian Athletics Series Final is viewed as a vital step in gauging his readiness to defend his Asian Games gold medal on the international stage.
