Lakshya Sen Discusses His Return to Form After Winning at the BWF World Championships

In a challenging opening match at the BWF World Championships, Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen overcame Bulgaria's Collins Valentine Filimon, securing a hard-fought victory with scores of 16-21, 21-8, 21-4. The match, which lasted 45 minutes, showcased Sen's ability to adapt his strategy after a rocky start. The 14th seed will next face Garret Tan from the USA, who advanced by defeating Switzerland's Tobias Kuenzi with a decisive score of 21-4, 21-15.

Strategic Adjustments Lead to Victory

Reflecting on his performance, Sen acknowledged the need for tactical changes after losing the first game. "In the first set, I was playing very short. When I was going for drives, I wasn't getting any points because he's tall and he can easily play those shots," Sen explained. He noted that by the second set, he adjusted his approach, opting to open up the game and engage in longer rallies, which ultimately turned the tide in his favor.

Sen admitted that his initial game plan was flawed, leading to numerous errors. "The game that I was playing was not right. I think I had to open up the game a bit more, get him into rallies," he said. This shift in strategy allowed him to capitalize on his opponent's weaknesses, particularly Filimon's height advantage, which Sen learned to counter effectively as the match progressed.

Overcoming Early Challenges

Initially, Sen struggled with his lifts, which he attributed to the windy conditions on his side of the court. "A lot of my lifts were going quite short," he noted. However, he found his rhythm after switching sides, allowing him to play more freely and confidently. "In the second set, I knew I'm on a better end, so I could play my game freely," he added.

In addition to his own match, Sen expressed pride in the performance of young compatriot Ayush Shetty, who made headlines by defeating reigning world champion and world No. 1 Shi Yu Qi in his opening round. "It was a great victory. We were all supporting Ayush to win, and he did great. I wish him luck for the coming matches," Sen remarked, highlighting the promising talent emerging in Indian badminton.
