India Close to Victory in 1st Test Against Sri Lanka, Who Are Four Wickets Down in Pursuit of 372 Runs

NEW DELHI: In a commanding display, India positioned themselves for a significant victory in the first Test against Sri Lanka, concluding the third day with the hosts struggling at 84 for four, still needing 288 runs to reach an ambitious target of 372. The Indian bowlers showcased their prowess in a decisive final session, leaving Sri Lanka in a precarious situation as they head into the last day of the match.

India's second innings was marked by aggressive batting, culminating in a total of 193 runs. Rishabh Pant led the charge with a dynamic 66, supported by Devdutt Padikkal's 44 and KL Rahul's 35. With only six wickets remaining, Sri Lanka faces a daunting challenge against an Indian bowling attack that has already made significant inroads into their lineup.

Sri Lanka's Struggles in the Chase

At the close of play, Sri Lanka's captain Dhananjaya de Silva remained unbeaten on 31, while Sonal Dinusha, who had previously scored a century in the first innings, was on 25. However, the historical context of Galle's pitch adds to the difficulty of their task; the highest successful fourth-innings chase at this venue is 344 runs, achieved by Pakistan in 2022, and only two successful chases above 200 have occurred since 1998.

The Sri Lankan innings began under pressure following a brief rain delay. Mohammed Siraj quickly put the hosts on the back foot by inducing Nishan Fernando into a pull shot that resulted in a catch for Prasidh Krishna. Prasidh continued to wreak havoc, dismissing Kamindu Mendis, who edged a delivery to KL Rahul after being set up with three balls aimed at his body. Meanwhile, left-arm spinner Manav Suthar made an immediate impact, claiming the wicket of Pasindu Sooriyabandara, who had come in as a concussion substitute for Dinesh Chandimal. Sooriyabandara's debut was short-lived, as Suthar trapped him leg before wicket on his first ball. The spinner later added Lahiru Udara to his tally, leaving Sri Lanka in dire straits.

Pant's Impactful Innings

Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka's bowlers had capitalized on favorable conditions, taking wickets at regular intervals. However, the partnership between Pant and Padikkal proved crucial in establishing a substantial lead for India. Pant's innings was characterized by his aggressive style, reaching his half-century in just 53 balls, highlighted by a six off Lahiru Kumara that also marked his 100th six in Test cricket, making him the fastest Indian to achieve this milestone.

Pant's innings concluded when he edged a delivery from Kumara to wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella, but his explosive performance had already shifted the momentum in India's favor. Padikkal, who had previously scored 167 in the first innings, continued his strong form with a fluent 44 before being dismissed by Keshara Nuwantha. India’s second innings began shakily, with Yashasvi Jaiswal falling to Asitha Fernando in the opening over, but Rahul's steadying presence and aggressive play against Prabath Jayasuriya helped build a crucial partnership with Padikkal, setting the stage for India's commanding position.
