Star Indian badminton player
Sen's performance began on a shaky note, as Filimon, the underdog, kept the pressure on him during the initial game. The Indian shuttler struggled to establish his rhythm, and after a closely contested start, he found himself trailing 12-17 due to a series of unforced errors. Despite making a brief comeback, Sen ultimately lost the first game as Filimon maintained composure and capitalized on Sen's mistakes.
Turning the Tide
In the second game, the dynamics shifted as both players were tied at 7-7. Sen then intensified his game, taking an 11-8 lead with a series of aggressive plays. He demonstrated his experience by scoring ten consecutive points, leaving Filimon unable to respond effectively. With a commanding lead of 15-1, Sen continued to dominate, ultimately sealing the match with ease.
Looking ahead, Sen is set to face Garret Tan from the United States, who advanced after defeating Switzerland's Tobias Kuenzi with a score of 21-4, 21-15.
Indian Women's Doubles Success
In women's doubles, the unseeded Indian duo of
Jolly and Gopichand started strong, with Jolly's powerful smashes and Gopichand's strategic drop shots leading them to a comfortable victory in the first game. They maintained their momentum in the second game, quickly establishing an 11-4 lead at the break and capitalizing on their opponents' errors to close out the match decisively.
However, the other Indian women's doubles team, Kavipriya Selvam and Simran Singhi, faced an early exit, losing to Bulgaria's ninth-seeded pair, Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva, with scores of 7-21, 14-21 in just 32 minutes.
In mixed doubles, India experienced a challenging day, with both Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde, as well as Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh, eliminated in the first round. Kapoor and Gadde fought hard but ultimately lost 22-20, 19-21, 17-21 to Canada's Jonathan Bing Tsan Lai and Crystal Lai. Surya and Pramuthesh also put up a strong fight, but fell short against Turkey's Emre Sonmez and Yasemen Bektas, losing 21-16, 29-30, 22-24.
Despite the setbacks, the Indian mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto remains in contention, having received a bye in the first round and set to face Macau's Iok Chong Leong and Weng Chi NG in their upcoming match.
Additionally, rising star Unnati Hooda advanced to the second round of the women's singles after a hard-fought victory over Myanmar's Thet Htar Thuzar, winning 22-20, 21-16 in a 40-minute match. Hooda, coached by her father, will next compete against 13th seed Michelle Li of Canada.
