NEW DELHI: As the first Test between India and Sri Lanka approaches its conclusion, Indian cricketer Devdutt Padikkal expressed confidence in the team's position after Day 4, with Sri Lanka struggling at 84 for 4 and requiring 288 runs to reach the daunting target of 372 runs. Padikkal, who contributed 44 runs in India's second innings, emphasized the importance of maintaining pressure on the opposition after a few quick wickets fell during their innings.

“We had to make sure to put pressure back on them with quick runs to establish control again,” Padikkal stated during a press conference following the day's play. India, having resumed the day at 54 for 2, was eventually bowled out for 193 runs in 48.5 overs. Rishabh Pant was the standout performer, scoring 66 runs off 69 balls, while Padikkal added 44 runs from 75 deliveries, and KL Rahul chipped in with 35 runs off 47 balls. This solid batting effort allowed India to make significant inroads into Sri Lanka's chase.

India's bowlers quickly made their mark, with Mohammed Siraj dismissing Nishan Madushka for just six runs. Manav Suthar then took two crucial wickets, and Prasidh Krishna added to the pressure by removing Kamindu Mendis, leaving Sri Lanka in a precarious position at 47 for 4. However, Dhananjaya de Silva and Sonal Dinusha managed to survive the final hour of play.

Padikkal's Technical Adjustments

In addition to discussing the match, Padikkal reflected on the adjustments he has been making to his technique as he transitions between white-ball and Test cricket. “I have worked on a lot of things. The technique changes from white ball to red ball. I have a setup for white ball, but it’s important to tighten my grip for the red ball. I have improved in this area and hope to continue doing so,” he explained.

With competition for the No. 3 batting position heating up, Padikkal praised fellow teammate Sai Sudharsan, highlighting his talent and potential. “Sai has been doing well for us, very talented. Whoever gets that opportunity should do well,” he remarked. He also spoke highly of his partnership with Rahul, noting their mutual understanding and chemistry on the field. “Batting with him is enjoyable; we have had long partnerships. He understands my tempo, and that chemistry helps,” Padikkal added.

India's Bowling Performance

Padikkal also commended India's pace attack, particularly in the challenging conditions of Galle, where the pitch has begun to favor spinners as the match progresses. “The fast bowlers bowled really well. I didn’t expect them to take so many wickets, but we know that matches can change quickly in Galle, especially on Days 3 and 4. The pitch is turning more from the stumps now than it was earlier,” he noted.

With Sri Lanka still needing 288 runs and India just six wickets away from victory, the final day of the Test promises to be an exciting and tense conclusion.
