Novak Djokovic Faces Unexpected Loss in Opening Match at Cincinnati Masters

In a dramatic second-round match at the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Masters, Novak Djokovic faced off against Argentine Thiago Tirante, ultimately succumbing to a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. The contest, which lasted over two and a half hours, marked Djokovic's first appearance since his semi-final exit at Wimbledon against Jannik Sinner more than a month ago. The match took place under sweltering heat and humidity, conditions that proved challenging for the seasoned player.

Djokovic, a 39-year-old tennis icon with 24 Grand Slam singles titles to his name, began the match strongly, taking the first set with relative ease. However, the intensity of the second set took its toll. A grueling 18-minute third game saw Djokovic save four break points across nine deuces, but he visibly struggled, bending over in distress and even dropping to his knees after a particularly taxing rally. Following this exhausting exchange, he called for a medical timeout, during which a physio and doctor assessed his condition and provided ice towels to help him cool down.

After Tirante claimed the second set, both players retreated to the locker room to recuperate. Djokovic returned to the court with renewed energy, initially setting the pace in the deciding set. However, the match took a turn in the ninth game when he faced multiple break points. Despite saving three, he faltered on a drop shot, allowing Tirante to convert the fourth break chance. The Argentine then secured the most significant victory of his career, as Djokovic again misfired on a drop shot during match point.

Following the match, Djokovic reflected on the possibility that this could be his final appearance in Cincinnati, stating, “It looks like I won’t be back, unfortunately to play here.” He acknowledged the impact of the oppressive weather conditions, saying, “It was a combination of the heat and humidity, all those things.” As he prepares for the upcoming US Open, which begins on August 30, Djokovic will need to regroup and reassess his strategy moving forward.
