Japan secures a clean sweep, claiming four championship titles in a remarkable display of dominance.

In a remarkable display of talent, Japan dominated the World Surf League (WSL) Shore Temple Classic QS 2000 and Pro Junior (JQS) competitions held at Mamallapuram beach on Saturday. Following a day marked by overcast skies, the event transformed into a thrilling showcase of surfing prowess, culminating in a clean sweep by Japanese competitors across all categories.

Ikko Watanabe emerged as a standout performer, clinching the title in the Open men’s category with a score of 17.10. He narrowly defeated fellow countryman Tenshi Iwami, finishing just 0.33 points ahead. Watanabe's impressive score not only secured him the championship but also marked the highest final score of the entire Shore Temple Classic, underscoring his exceptional skills on the water.

In the women’s Pro Junior final, Mirai Ikeda faced tough competition but managed to secure the Open women’s title with a score of 14.00. She triumphed over Thailand’s Isabel Higgs, who was the only non-Japanese competitor in the finals, by a margin of 1.60 points. Although Ikeda finished fourth in the Pro Junior category, her victory in the Open women’s event highlighted her versatility and determination.

The Pro Junior competitions also saw impressive performances from Japanese surfers, with Yuma Nagasawa and Hinata Shimizu taking home the top honors in the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively. Nagasawa scored 14.17, while Shimizu achieved a score of 14.23, further solidifying Japan's dominance in the sport.

Arun Vasu, president of the Asian Surfing Federation and the Surfing Federation of India, hinted at exciting developments for the upcoming year, suggesting that two WSL events could be hosted in India. The Andaman Islands have already been confirmed as the venue for one of these anticipated competitions. Ty Sorati, the tour director for WSL Asia-Pacific, was present at the closing ceremony, adding to the significance of the event.
