Chennai Open Tennis Tournament Scheduled for November 2-8

The Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA) has received a significant boost with an initial funding of ₹10 crore from the Tamil Nadu government for the upcoming WTA 250 Chennai Open, scheduled to take place from November 2 to 8. This financial support has instilled confidence in the TNTA regarding the acquisition of additional sponsorships necessary for the tournament's success.

Corporate Support and Technological Advancements

During a press conference held on Friday, TNTA president Vijay Amritraj expressed optimism about the event's financial backing, noting that many corporate sponsors who supported the tournament in previous years have committed to returning this year. “I am proud to announce that nearly all of our past sponsors, alongside the Government of Tamil Nadu, have reaffirmed their support for this year’s event,” stated the 72-year-old tennis legend, who also extended his gratitude to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay for his unwavering support of tennis in the state.

This year’s Chennai Open will introduce electronic line calling technology across all courts, including the Centre Court and three additional courts, marking a first for the tournament. Previously, the Hawk Eye system was only utilized on the Centre Court. Amritraj mentioned ongoing discussions aimed at attracting “two to four players from the world’s top 50” to participate in this year’s championship, which would elevate the tournament's competitive profile.

Government Commitment to Tennis Development

Sandeep Nanduri, Secretary of the Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department, reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring the tournament's success. He expressed satisfaction with the collaboration between the government and TNTA, stating, “We are fully prepared to provide any necessary support, and our SDAT-Nungambakkam stadium is ready to host the event.”

Nanduri also revealed the government's aspirations to reinstate the men’s ATP 250 event in Tamil Nadu, emphasizing that the TNTA would play a crucial role in realizing this goal. “We are actively working to bring the ATP 250 event back to Tamil Nadu, and I am confident that TNTA will support our department's vision,” he added.
