Rafael Jodar Makes History at Shanghai Masters with Semifinal Berth

Rafael Jodar etched his name into the record books on Friday, becoming the youngest semifinalist in the history of the Shanghai Masters. The 20-year-old Spaniard secured his place in the final four after a resilient performance against Casper Ruud, marking his fourth consecutive comeback victory at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.

Jodar’s path to the semifinals was far from straightforward, as he dropped the opening set before finding his rhythm. Despite the early deficit, the young talent maintained his composure to eventually overcome Ruud with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 scoreline. The match, which lasted 2 hours and 20 minutes, saw Jodar capitalize on his opportunities by breaking his opponent's serve five times across the final two sets.

Reflecting on the contest, Jodar acknowledged the difficulty of facing a player of Ruud's caliber. He noted that while his opponent held the advantage in the crucial moments of the first set, his own persistence proved decisive. Jodar explained that he struggled to convert break points early on due to the strength of Ruud's serve, but he remained focused on elevating his game to force a turnaround.

Standing between Jodar and a spot in the final is Daniil Medvedev. The former Shanghai Masters champion earned his own semifinal berth by defeating American Tommy Paul in a three-set encounter that concluded 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Much like Jodar, Medvedev faced a mid-match dip in form but managed to regain his composure to close out the victory in 2 hours and 9 minutes.

Medvedev admitted that his performance fluctuated throughout the match, noting that he felt slightly off-balance at times. However, he expressed satisfaction with his ability to regroup, particularly in the third set, where he improved his serving to secure the win. With both players coming off hard-fought victories, the upcoming semifinal promises to be a significant test for the young Spaniard as he looks to continue his historic run in the tournament.
