Inter Milan Move Clear at Serie A Summit as Napoli Suffer Shock Defeat

Inter Milan have moved to the top of the Serie A standings after staging a resilient comeback to defeat Bologna 3-1 on Saturday. The victory provides a significant boost for the champions, who successfully rebounded from their midweek Champions League disappointment against Club Brugge to establish a three-point cushion over second-placed Lazio.

Despite missing their captain and leading scorer Lautaro Martinez, who is sidelined for a month due to injury, Inter demonstrated their depth at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara. Although Bologna took an early lead through Tommaso Pobega in the 10th minute and threatened to extend it when Pobega struck the crossbar, the visitors remained composed. Marcus Thuram leveled the scoring with a powerful header, and tactical adjustments by Cristian Chivu ultimately shifted the momentum in Inter's favor.

Impact Substitutions Secure Inter Victory

The match turned decisively in the second half following Chivu’s decision to rotate his squad. Carlos Augusto made an immediate impact, finding the net within sixty seconds of entering the fray. The substitute later turned provider, setting up fellow replacement Ange-Yoan Bonny to seal the result. Inter now shift their focus to Wednesday’s Champions League fixture against Shakhtar Donetsk, where they will look to secure their first points of the European campaign.

Venezia Stun Napoli in Nicola’s Debut

While Inter celebrated, Napoli’s season hit a new low with a 1-0 defeat to bottom-side Venezia. The result marked a dream start for new Venezia head coach Davide Nicola, who was appointed earlier in the week to replace Giovanni Stroppa. Akor Adams scored the decisive goal in the 49th minute, securing Venezia’s first Serie A victory over Napoli since 1942.

Napoli struggled to respond despite the introduction of high-profile substitutes Rasmus Hojlund and Kevin De Bruyne. Hojlund earned a penalty after being fouled by Matias Moreno, but De Bruyne saw his spot-kick saved by Venezia goalkeeper Filip Stankovic. Stankovic proved to be a formidable barrier throughout the second half, denying efforts from Stanislav Lobotka and Alisson Santos to preserve the lead.

The defeat is Napoli’s fifth in all competitions this season, leaving them in ninth place with 10 points from seven matches. Manager Massimiliano Allegri acknowledged the gravity of the situation, noting that the team must channel their frustration into professional improvement ahead of their upcoming Champions League match against Bodo/Glimt. For Venezia, the result provides their first points of the season, offering a glimmer of hope under their new leadership.
