Chicago Bears Activate Kyler Gordon from PUP List Ahead of Falcons Clash

The Chicago Bears have bolstered their secondary ahead of their upcoming matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, officially activating nickel cornerback Kyler Gordon from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. The move, announced on Saturday, returns the defensive back to the active 53-man roster after he spent the opening month of the season sidelined.

Gordon had been placed on the reserve/PUP list on August 30 following a calf injury sustained during the offseason. After missing the team's first four games, he returned to the practice field on September 30. Having been a full participant in every training session over the last three weeks, the coaching staff has expressed confidence in his readiness to rejoin the rotation.

Gordon's Return and Roster Adjustments

Bears head coach Ben Johnson noted on Friday that the team is pleased with the progress Gordon has made during his rehabilitation. While the coaching staff is weighing the exact timing of his return to game action, Johnson indicated that the cornerback is well-positioned to make an immediate impact. The team is optimistic about his ability to contribute in various defensive packages as they look to integrate him back into the lineup.

To accommodate Gordon’s return to the active roster, the Chicago organization placed defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo on injured reserve. Odeyingbo, who suffered a quad injury during the team's recent game against the Green Bay Packers, had already been ruled out for the Week 6 contest. Although the team initially hoped to avoid placing him on the long-term injured list, the decision was finalized as part of the roster shuffle.

Context of the Secondary

The return of the 2022 second-round pick is a significant development for a Bears defense looking for consistency in the slot. Gordon, who was the first player selected by general manager Ryan Poles, signed a three-year, $40 million extension in April 2025. His availability has been a challenge in recent times, as he was limited to five games last season due to recurring soft tissue injuries that resulted in two separate stints on injured reserve.

Statistical data from the previous campaign highlights the importance of Gordon finding his form. According to Next Gen Stats, he allowed 16 receptions on 24 targets for 243 yards and three touchdowns during his limited appearances. As he prepares for his 2026 debut, the Bears will be looking for the defensive back to regain the form that made him a cornerstone of their secondary plans.
