Kevin Durant hits back at Suns owner Matt Ishbia over 'mistake' comments

Kevin Durant has publicly pushed back against Phoenix Suns owner Matt Ishbia following comments regarding the team's acquisition of the star forward. The dispute stems from Ishbia’s recent characterization of the blockbuster trade as a strategic error, suggesting that the move to bring Durant to Phoenix was not aligned with the organization's long-term vision.

Taking to social media platform X on Saturday, the current Houston Rockets player expressed frustration with how his tenure in Phoenix was framed. Durant defended his individual performance during his time with the Suns, noting that he maintained a high level of play at age 36 and contributed to the team's culture. He further criticized the narrative by stating that the owner’s comments made it appear as though he had committed a serious personal transgression rather than simply being part of a high-profile roster move.

Ishbia reflects on early ownership lessons

The controversy follows an appearance by Ishbia on CNBC Sport, where he discussed the challenges he faced shortly after purchasing the Suns for $4 billion in February 2023. Ishbia admitted that in his eagerness to compete for a championship, he prioritized immediate results over a defined organizational identity. He described the decision to trade for Durant—which involved sending Mikal Bridges, Cameron Johnson, and significant draft capital to Brooklyn—as a moment where he simply threw money at the problem rather than adhering to a clear path.

Ishbia clarified that his assessment was not a direct critique of Durant’s talent or character, but rather a reflection on his own management style at the time. He noted that the team lacked a clear North Star and that acquiring high-level talent did not automatically translate into the championship success he had envisioned. Following the conclusion of that era, Ishbia has since overhauled the front office and coaching staff, appointing Brian Gregory as general manager and Jordan Ott as head coach to establish a new culture.

Durant’s transition to Houston

Durant’s time in Phoenix concluded in the 2025 offseason when he was traded to the Houston Rockets as part of a historic seven-team deal. During his final season with the Suns, the forward averaged 26.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists across 62 games. His individual consistency remains notable, as he enters his second season in Houston having recorded four consecutive campaigns with at least 25 points per game while shooting 50% from the field and 40% from three-point range.

The veteran signed a two-year, $90 million contract extension last October, which includes a player option for the 2027-28 season. As both parties move forward, the public exchange highlights the differing perspectives on the Suns' attempt to secure a title during the 2023-2025 period, a tenure that ultimately resulted in only one playoff series victory.
