Krishna Nagar Leads Indian Para-Badminton Charge at Asian Para Games

Tokyo Paralympics gold medallist Krishna Nagar spearheaded a productive day for the Indian para-badminton contingent at the Asian Para Games on Saturday. Nagar secured his place in the men's singles SH6 quarterfinals after registering his second consecutive group-stage victory, defeating Indonesia’s Subhan 21-13, 21-15. This result guarantees the Indian star a top-two finish in Group C with one match remaining.

The Indian squad saw significant success across various standing and wheelchair classifications. In the men's singles SL3 category, Paris Paralympics champion Nitesh Kumar dominated his match against Thailand’s Natthapol Chamnanwet, winning 21-6, 21-7. Meanwhile, fellow Tokyo Paralympics gold medallist Pramod Bhagat navigated a tougher challenge to overcome China’s Xiong Lichuan 21-17, 21-16. Umesh Vikram Kumar also contributed to the tally with a 21-10, 21-12 victory over the Philippines' Khian Kyle Urbano.

Strong Performances Across Singles and Doubles Categories

The momentum continued in the SL4 category, where Naveen Sivakumar and Surya Kant Yadav both secured straight-game wins against Hikmat Ramdani and Koki Ogawa, respectively. In the SU5 classification, Ruthick Ragupathi and Hardik Makkar both emerged victorious in their respective matches. The wheelchair events also provided positive results, with Prem Kumar Ale winning a three-game battle in the WH1 category, and Haris Mythili Srikumar securing a win in WH2.

In the women's singles events, Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan claimed a 21-18, 21-13 victory in the SH6 category. Thulasimathi Murugesan produced a dominant performance in the SU5 class, conceding only four points in a 21-2, 21-2 win over Brunei's Zainab Mohamed, while Manisha Ramadass defeated compatriot Shanthiya Vishwanathan. However, the women's SL3 and SL4 categories proved difficult for the Indian team, with Manasi Joshi, Sanjana Kumari, Neeraj, Mandeep Kaur, and Kanak Singh Jadaun all suffering defeats against their respective opponents.

The doubles action yielded mixed results for the Indian camp. Surya Kant Yadav and Naveen Sivakumar secured a notable win in the men's doubles SL3-SU5, while Thulasimathi Murugesan and Manasi Joshi triumphed in the women's doubles SL3-SU5. In the mixed doubles WH1-WH2, Alphia James and Prem Kumar Ale defeated their opponents from Chinese Taipei. Despite these successes, several other Indian pairs, including Sukant Kadam and Pramod Bhagat, faced losses in their respective doubles encounters as the tournament progresses.
