Pune Racing Season Set for 31st Edition of S.A. Poonawalla Million

The Pune racing season reaches a significant milestone this weekend as the 31st renewal of the S.A. Poonawalla Million is set to take place on September 13. As one of the most anticipated events on the local calendar, the race carries a total purse of ₹1.5 million, marking it as the richest contest for its age group.

Named in honour of the late Soil A. Poonawalla, a pioneer of thoroughbred breeding in India and a dedicated advocate for integrity in the sport, the event continues a legacy that began when he first entered the breeding industry in 1946. The race, contested over a distance of one mile, is widely considered a traditional indicator for the upcoming classics, drawing significant attention from owners, trainers, and racing enthusiasts alike.

Contenders Prepare for High-Stakes Mile

A field of seven horses has been confirmed for the event, with Pesi Shroff’s colt Jaandaar entering as the top-weighted runner. Having secured three victories to date, including a recent success in the F.D. Wadia Trophy, Jaandaar is currently in peak form and will look to overcome his penalty to extend his winning streak on the track.

Competition for the title is expected to be fierce, with several other contenders demonstrating strong preparation. Adhirajsingh Jodha’s Avener, a dual-race winner, has shown excellent form in training and is considered a serious threat to the favourites. Similarly, the Malesh Narredu-trained Invincible Force enters the race with two impressive victories already on his record, marking him as a promising challenger.

Rounding out the primary contenders is the filly Minari, trained by Imtiaz Sait. With two wins from six career starts, she remains a potential spoiler capable of upsetting the more heavily favoured runners. As the racing community gathers for this marquee event, the focus remains on whether the established form of the top-weighted runners will hold or if a newcomer will emerge to claim the prestigious prize.
