Magnus Carlsen returns to Global Chess League as tournament kicks off

Five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen has expressed his enthusiasm for returning to the Global Chess League (GCL) as the tournament prepares for its latest edition. The Norwegian grandmaster, who missed the previous season, noted that the sport has successfully reached new audiences over the past several years through creative presentation and innovative event structures.

Reflecting on his history with the Alpine Pipers, Carlsen acknowledged the team's success during his absence last year. He stated that his primary goal for this campaign is to perform at his best and maintain the high standards set by the squad during their recent title-winning run. Carlsen highlighted his interest in participating in modern formats like the GCL and the Total Chess World Championship Tour, which he believes are effectively capturing global interest.

Javokhir Sindarov, who is set to challenge D. Gukesh for the world title later this year, expressed his excitement about competing on the first board for the Fyers American Gambits. While the world title match remains on the horizon, Sindarov stated he is currently prioritizing his performance in the league to help his team secure the championship.

The event also marks the debut of Turkish prodigy Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, who joins the Alaskan Knights alongside Anand and Arjun Erigaisi. Meanwhile, Women’s World Cup winner Divya Deshmukh is preparing for her first GCL appearance, specifically noting the challenge of playing without time increments. GCL chairman Peeyush Dubey concluded that the league continues to demonstrate the potential for chess to be celebrated as a major festival, supported by significant global partnerships.
