Global Chess League Returns to India as Bengaluru Hosts Fourth Edition

Bengaluru, often celebrated as the heart of India's technology sector, is set to become the epicenter of the chess world this weekend. The fourth edition of the Global Chess League (GCL), a collaborative venture between Tech Mahindra and the international chess governing body FIDE, officially commences at the Lalit Ashok on Saturday. This marks the second time the prestigious tournament has been hosted in India, following the previous season held in Mumbai.

The league has garnered a reputation for its distinct approach to the game, introducing several innovative rules that differentiate it from traditional international chess formats. Notable adjustments include the absence of time increments for the opening 40 moves, a scoring system that awards four points for a victory with the black pieces, and the requirement for teams to feature both male and female players. Additionally, the tournament utilizes a pre-match toss to determine board colors, a practice that has contributed to the event's unique competitive atmosphere.

Local fans in Bengaluru will have the opportunity to witness several of the game's most prominent figures in action. The roster of participants includes legendary grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, representing the PBG Alaskan Knights, and Alireza Firouzja, who will compete for the Triveni Continental Kings. Other notable names set to feature throughout the event include Javokhir Sindarov for the Fyers American Gambits, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave for the CheQ Mumba Masters, and Ian Nepomniachtchi, who will represent the Ganges Grandmasters.
