India Secures Podium Spot at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

In a remarkable display of athletic prowess, India concluded its participation in the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, securing a commendable fourth place overall. This achievement came despite a significant reduction in the total medal count, which fell from 61 in the previous edition to 39 this year, comprising 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze medals. The Indian contingent's performance was particularly bolstered by an impressive showing from the boxing team, which clinched seven gold and three silver medals on the penultimate day of the competition.

The boxing events showcased the determination and skill of Indian athletes, with standout performances from five women boxers—Sakshi Chaudhary, Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, Priya Ghanghas, and Arundhati Choudhary—alongside two male boxers, Sachin Siwach and Ankush Panghal. Their collective efforts not only contributed to India's medal tally but also marked the country's best performance in boxing at the Commonwealth Games, with a total of ten medals, surpassing the previous record by three.

Notable Achievements Across Disciplines

India's success extended beyond boxing, with a total of 16 medals earned in athletics and para-athletics. Para-athletes Dilip Gavit, Soman Rana, and Sharmila Dhankar played pivotal roles in this achievement, as the country secured ten medals in these events, an improvement from the eight medals won in Birmingham in 2022. Neeraj Chopra, recovering from an injury, added a silver medal in javelin, contributing to India's growing reputation in the sport alongside Yashvir Singh. Other highlights included Praveen Chithravel and Selva Prabhu's podium finishes in the triple jump, Gulveer Singh's historic medals in both the 5000m and 10000m events, and Murali Sreeshankar's consecutive silver in long jump.

In judo, Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh made headlines by winning India's first gold medals in the sport, while weightlifter Mirabai Chanu continued her dominance by securing her third consecutive gold medal. The overall performance of the Indian athletes exceeded expectations, as the contingent aimed for around 30 medals. With Ahmedabad set to host a larger Commonwealth Games in 2030, the success in Glasgow has raised anticipation for the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, where Indian athletes are expected to compete across a broader range of disciplines. However, to elevate its global standing, India must focus on prioritizing specific sports and addressing challenges such as doping, especially with aspirations to host the 2036 Olympics.
