A Local Hero Takes the Helm
Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Monta Ellis has a storied history in basketball, having been drafted by the Golden State Warriors in 2005 directly from Lanier High School, where he led his team to two state championships. Alcorn State, located in Lorman, Mississippi, expressed pride in welcoming “one proud Mississippi son” back to his home state.
In a statement, Alcorn State's athletic director, E. D’Wayne Robinson, praised Ellis for his championship experience and basketball acumen. “Monta Ellis brings a championship pedigree and a wealth of basketball knowledge to our program, and we’re thrilled to welcome him to the Alcorn State family,” Robinson stated. He emphasized that Ellis's background in professional basketball and his commitment to nurturing young talent make him an ideal fit for the program's leadership.

Ellis steps into this role following a challenging season for the Alcorn State Braves, who finished with a record of 9-23 and 7-11 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference under first-year head coach Jake Morton. The university is hopeful that Ellis's expertise will help revitalize the program and foster a winning culture.
