Montez Sweat Returns to Bears Lineup Following Two-Game Suspension

Chicago Bears defensive end Montez Sweat has officially returned to the team following a two-game suspension for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing substances policy. The 30-year-old pass rusher, who missed consecutive victories over the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots, was reinstated on October 23 and is expected to be available for the team's upcoming Week 8 clash against the Seattle Seahawks.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, Sweat described the experience as devastating, emphasizing that the positive test was the result of an accidental ingestion of a banned substance. While he declined to provide specific details regarding the incident, he clarified that the Chicago Bears' internal nutritional and training staff were not involved in the matter. Sweat opted not to appeal the league's decision, choosing instead to accept full responsibility for the situation.

Impact on Career and Financial Standing

The suspension carries significant professional and financial ramifications for the veteran defender. Beyond the two-game absence, Sweat has forfeited $2.3 million of his 2026 base salary. Furthermore, the remaining $12.7 million owed for the current season, along with $21 million in future guarantees for 2027, have been voided as a consequence of the violation. Reflecting on the impact to his reputation, Sweat acknowledged that the incident is something he will have to live with throughout the remainder of his career.

Sweat, who is currently in his eighth NFL season, noted that he does not plan to alter his established training regimen, citing his clean record prior to this incident. Head coach Ben Johnson, who previously praised Sweat’s 2025 performance as the best of his professional career, noted the difficulty of the situation during their recent conversations. Despite the setback, the defensive end expressed a desire to move forward and focus on his on-field contributions. Through the early portion of the season, Sweat has recorded seven tackles, two tackles for loss, and two sacks.
